  • ABOUT DETAILS ON THE MUDSLIDE

    2008-9-16

You can see more details on the mudslide here, but it's pretty clear that it was caused by sloppy enforcement of mining safety rules, hence the governor's resignation. Optimists might say that this is a sign that the Communist Party is making top officials directly responsible for such disasters. They might point out that Meng's replacement is none other that the recently appointed head of China's deferal work safety supervisory body, showing how seriously Beijing is taking the incident.

    2008-9-01

France are the latest country to react badly to Great Britain's Olympic success, with a withering comment from their sports minister, Bernard Laporte. The former coach of the France rugby side took a swipe at Britain's strategy in Beijing by saying his country would not focus their resources on "four or five" sports in order to increase their medals haul.

"We aren't just going to concentrate our means on four or five sports to bring home the medals, like the British have done," he said, alluding to Team GB's golds in cycling, sailing, rowing and swimming - and disregarding the fact that Britain won their 47 medals in 11 different sports.

Coming after disdain in the Australian media and sarcastic comments from John Coates, the president of the Australian Olympic committee, about British success in the pool and the velodrome, it seems another of Britain's oldest sporting rivals are experiencing a case of sour grapes at Team GB's fourth place in the medals table and 19 golds in China.

France finished 10th in the Beijing table, with seven golds, but Laporte looked forward to success at the 2012 Games in London and said that "80% of the [French] medallists will still be up for selection in 2012".

    2008-8-29

So, we asked ourselves, what could London possibly do to match the massive spectacle that Beijing put on for the Opening and Closing ceremonies? It couldn't possibly do anything to compare to the sheer scale of the Chinese efforts so (leaving aside the dire business with the double decker bus which I will pass over without further comment), the only answer was that most British of qualities.

Some people have strong personal feelings with respect to making money from their blogs.  If you think commercializing your blog is evil, immoral, unethical, uncool, lame, greedy, obnoxious, or anything along those lines, then don’t commercialize it.

Affiliate programs like Amazon and LinkShare (commission on products sold, mostly books)
Advertising sold to individual advertisers (three-month campaigns or longer)

  • Liu Xiang, China's sole track gold medalist

    2008-8-26

Liu Xiang, China's sole track gold medalist and national icon who had to pull out of the 110 meters hurdles because of injury, seems to have enjoyed a charmed life and unfailing love from his followers. For millions of Chinese, Liu is the symbol of vitality, individuality, hope, and most importantly, national pride. His handsome face, defiant demeanor and self-confidence speak of a modern China, or how China would like to be seen by the world. For my part, however, I have never been a big fan. In fact, I was growing weary of seeing pictures of him everywhere and particularly his smug smile. He was a was the champion who seemed to bask in the glory of being a superstar, but I wasn't sure there was any more to him than that. Now I know there is. Faced with a tragic moment in his career, under tremendous pressure from a sports system where victory is everything and confronted by disillusioned, bitter former fans filled with righteous rage, Liu showed integrity, tenacity, and grace. At 10pm on the night of August 18th, the day he had to pull out of his qualifying heat, Liu appeared on Chinese television. He was calm, composed and quietly apologetic. "There are so many people supporting me, caring about me, helping me along the way, and I am really sorry," Liu said. He tried to explain what happened on the track but there was little he could say. "I also didn't want to see this happen. I thought of soldiering on, but if I did that, my tendon might have been permanently damaged. I really could not do it. At the moment I couldn't even put my feeling into words." Liu also expressed an admirable optimism about his future. "I know I have the potential, if only I let my injury recover. I won't explain more. I believe I will get better. The main task for me at the moment is to get treatment for my injury. There are other opportunities next year, and years after that. I must think positively. I will not blame the circumstances and I do not give up easily. I will pull myself together. That is who I am." This is who Liu is and his remaining fans, as well as new ones like me, love him for that. Here's the link to the interview:

  • Phelps looking ahead to 2012 London Olympics

    2008-8-25

Phelps, fresh from the Beijing Olympics where he won a record eight gold medals, said he’s never competed in a backstroke event at a major international meet or in the 100-meter freestyle.

“No breaststroke, no distance swimming, no open water swimming,” Phelps said. “At least those guys will still be my friends.”

The 23-year-old American also confirmed that the 2012 games will be his last Olympics.

“I’ve never wanted to go beyond 30,” he said. “I may go a few years beyond the Olympics. I said to my coach, ‘Don’t get any ideas because I don’t want to compete beyond 30,’ and he said, ‘That’s good because I don’t want to coach you past the age of 30.’”

Phelps has said Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods are the two superstars he’d most like to meet following his exploits in China, and he could be emulating one of them already.

Woods took time at the pinnacle of his career to remodel his swing to renew his dominance, and Phelps is speaking of completely switching the training program he has followed for the past decade.

Phelps said the changes suggested by coach Bob Bowman could help rejuvenate him mentally and physically after what he described as the most grueling period of his life.

“Bob said to me that he’s going to take everything he’s done coaching me and throw it out the door and try something completely different, just to see how it works,” Phelps said. “We’ll try a bunch of new things. If we’re successful, great. If not, we can go back to what we’ve been doing.”

Only a supremely confident athlete would contemplate moving away from a program that has brought a record 14 Olympic gold medals, an unprecedented eight at one games and the unofficial title of history’s greatest swimmer.

But “confident” sums up Phelps pretty well.

Despite arriving in London late Saturday, Phelps posed good-naturedly with one of his medals through 10 minutes of blinding camera flashes—adopting each of the artificial poses requested of him with an easy manner and enthusiasm.

Phelps said he was enjoying his celebrity status, but deflected suggestions that the rock star treatment could distract him from being as dominant in 2012 as he was in 2008.

“If you’re having fun, that’s really all that matters,” Phelps said. “You can still do everything and still be successful. You can do anything and everything. One of the biggest things I’ve learned over last four years is that anything’s possible.

“I’ve had some pretty lofty dreams in my head. Those dreams and those goals are going to stay until they’re accomplished,” Phelps added. “It’s not going to be easy getting there, there are going to be some bumps in the road here and there, but everyone has bumps in the road and it depends how you get over them.”

All the audience joined the countdown from 10, while the numbers were displayed by firework explosions in the sky.

Liu xiang perseverance

    2008-8-20

BEIJING, Aug. 18 -- Tens of thousands of people had come to glimpse China's megastar hurdler at a mere qualifying heat Monday. The anticipation was so great that, at first, when spectators saw a wincing Liu Xiang pull out of the race, there was only stunned silence.

Then, after it became clear that Liu was injured, that his hopes for Olympic glory had been ruined, the nation's pain set in abruptly. At a news conference, Liu's coach burst into tears explaining to the international media how his star pupil had been "trying to hold on, exerting himself to his utmost." When Sun Haiping added that Liu could barely stand before the race, despite the assistance of three doctors, Chinese reporters began sobbing as well.

Tears were followed by anger. Although the general coach of China's athletics team said Liu was forced to drop out because of a recurring problem with his Achilles tendon, droves of fans criticized the hurdler online, accusing the 25-year-old Shanghai native of letting the nation down. He "stained the motherland" by not finishing the heat, some said, adding that he should have crawled on his hands and knees if necessary.

Liu was China's hope for gold in the 110-meter hurdles, but his failure to qualify for the finals showed that he represented so much more. His gold-medal performance in Athens four years ago had made history in China -- which had never before won gold in a track and field event -- and proved that the Chinese could shine in sports traditionally dominated by the West. On Monday, in a single moment at the Bird's Nest stadium, it was as if the nation's pride and honor had been snatched away.

Liu's perseverance -- showing up to compete despite the pain -- raised questions about the enormous pressure placed on him by coaches, the public and even the country's leaders. Pictures of him have been splashed across magazines and billboards, his every move followed in the news media.

The hurdler's disappointment was so great that Xi Jinping, President Hu Jintao's likely successor as Communist Party leader, sent Liu a note of condolence Monday, according to the state-run New China News Agency.

Beijing seemed to be in mourning, as video clips of the tearful news conference with Liu's coach spread on the Internet. National sports commentators resorted to frenzied hyperbole.

"At noon, the collective sigh of the Chinese people became a hurricane which attacked Chinese sports heavily in one minute. The whole country lost its breath in that moment," sports commentator Li Tong blogged.

For decades, China has been known mainly for its skill at "small ball" sports such as table tennis and badminton. Liu had become a symbol of potential in other sports.

"Yao Ming is just as famous, but nobody expects him to win a gold medal," said Zhang Ming, a professor of international studies at People's University. "Liu Xiang's big breakthrough in track and field is not only for China, but all of East Asia. . . . His win in Athens helped eliminate a deep inferiority complex in Chinese people's hearts."

Liu himself wanted badly to run on Monday, his coaches said, but his face was contorted in pain even while he was warming up. After the race, he could be seen on stadium screens limping off the field, down a tunnel and into an empty area, where he sat down with his back against the wall, his head in his hands, alone.

"Liu Xiang will not withdraw unless the pain is intolerable, unless he has no other way out," said Feng Shuyong, general coach of China's athletics team and president of the Chinese track federation.

Xi's official telegraph to China's General Administration of Sport conveyed his sympathy and "warm courage" to Liu and his tearful coach and expressed hope that Liu would rest easily. "When he recovers," Xi added, "he should continue to train hard, strengthen his fighting spirit and gain bigger honors for the motherland."

Liu had suffered a hamstring injury in May that forced him to pull out of a race in New York. But no one realized he had such a serious injury to the Achilles tendon, sports commentator Li said in a telephone interview. Many Chinese, rather than feeling sympathetic toward Liu, felt cheated by him.

"It is very difficult for Chinese people to change their ideas about sports or to become more rational in a short time," Li said.

Many fans were upset that Liu's injury had not been made public earlier. Others virtually cast him off, noting that China already has more gold medals than any other nation at the Games.

"To be frank, we don't need a gold medal from you," said one critic from the southern city of Guangzhou, addressing Liu online at http://www.163.com, a popular news site.

Outside the Bird's Nest, people were shocked and disappointed but more sympathetic than those online. "I totally understand his injury," said He Chunxian, 32, a sports teacher. "What he achieved would have been almost unimaginable when I was training for track and field. If I were Liu, I'd rather give away millions to not compete in this game. I cannot imagine the pressure."

Li Bo, 50, a retired factory worker from Heilongjiang province, said Liu had become "a symbol of power, a symbol of 'Go, China!' "

"After he dropped out," Li said, "I almost lost my strength to continue watching the game."

China has a history of heaping expectations on athletes, in a country where sports are highly politicized and glory is collective rather than individual. Twenty years ago, the public abandoned gymnast Li Ning, who won gold in Los Angeles in 1984 but did not win a medal in Seoul in 1988. Now a billionaire sportswear entrepreneur, Li Ning was chosen to light the Olympic cauldron in this month's Opening Ceremonies.

One online user at Tianya, China's largest bulletin-board service, wrote that only weak nations pressure their athletes. "Liu Xiang pulling out is the beginning of China's maturity," the user wrote. "If people are naive enough to hope one person can support the dignity of the whole nation, then China is hopeless."

  • About gold medal

    2008-8-19

I think we shouldn't pay attention whether the athlete won a gold medal or not. Silver and bronze medal is also important and it's also a great honor. In the competition, as long as you try your best to perform, you are already a champion.

  • Liu xiang is best

I believe he pulled out because of the rule for false starts. They are allowed one, but if another one happens, whomever it happens to is disqualified. Perhaps he quit knowing it would probably happen to him again because of his injury. I sort of felt sorry for him. I hate to see any athlete be forced to quit. I saw one disqualified in the swimming competitions for falling in the water before a swim. It happens to the best of them.

China's Liu Xiang (L) leaves the tracks after getting injury in the first round competition of men's 110m hurdles at the National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, during Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, Aug. 18, 2008. (Xinhua/Li Ga)

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Defending Olympic champion Liu Xiang pulled out of the men's 110m hurdles first round Monday morning at the Beijing Olympics.

In the last heat of the first round, Liu quit the race after a false start of Dutchman Marcel van der Westen. He limped off the track, obviously being troubled by a foot injury.

Liu's coach Sun Haiping said in a post-race press conference, "His right heel injury has been a long problem since six years ago, even before the Athens Olympics."

"On Aug. 16, we arrived at the Olympic village, medical experts analyzed Liu's injury and specified there was a problem on Liu's Achilles's tendon," Sun said.

World record holder Dayron Robles of Cuba earlier breezed through to the next round, clocking 13.39 seconds.

He said, "I'm perfect today, and the track is good for breaking world record."

Without Liu and Olympic silver medalist Terrence Trammell of the United States, who fell down to the track in heat five, Robles will be almost unbeatable in the finals.

Liu's teammates Shi Dongpeng and Ji Wei were also qualified for the next round.
